United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) – BMO
Brief Introduction:
The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) is a prestigious mathematics competition organized by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT), established in 1996. It is one of the most challenging competitions under the UKMT, specifically designed for senior high school students. Each year, around 1000 mathematically gifted students are invited to participate in the competition, which also serves as the selection process for the UK national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Why we recommend BMO:
The BMO offers an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their mathematical talents at a high level. It not only challenges participants with complex problem-solving tasks but also serves as a gateway to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) for UK students. For international students, the BMO provides a platform to compete against some of the brightest minds in mathematics.
Time schedule (Based on the 2023-2024 schedule):
- BMO Round 1: November 15, 2023
- BMO Round 2: January 24, 2024
Registration:
- In the UK, only top performers in the Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC) are invited to participate in BMO1. In China, students can directly register for BMO1. Registration must be done through ASDAN partner schools or institutions; individual registrations are not accepted. ASDAN Registration
Test types:
- Competition Format:
- Online reading of problems and online/offline answering. Individual participation.
- BMO1 consists of 6 questions, and BMO2 consists of 4 questions.
- Duration:
- Total time: 3.5 hours
- Marking scheme:
- Proof-based questions, 10 marks per question.
- Blank answers receive 0 marks, partial marks awarded based on the clarity of mathematical reasoning. It is recommended to write down the best possible answer after rough calculations; a complete solution is more likely to receive higher marks than multiple incomplete attempts.
Advancement Criteria:
- 2021 BMO Round 2 cutoff scores:
- A2/Grade 12: 3+
- AS/Grade 11: 32+
- GS/Grade 10: 31+
- G1/Grade 9: 29+
Awards:
- BMO1:
- Gold: Top 20 in the UK
- Silver: Ranked 21-50 in the UK
- Bronze: Ranked 51-100 in the UK
- Distinction: 2021 cutoff was 21+ marks, awarded to approximately the top 26% of students
- Merit: 2021 cutoff was 11+ marks, awarded to approximately 66% of students
- BMO2:
- Distinction: 2022 cutoff was 17+ marks, awarded to approximately the top 25% of students
- Merit: 2022 cutoff was 10+ marks, awarded to approximately 48% of students
Syllabus Linkage:
The BMO typically covers topics such as geometry, trigonometry, functional equations, algebra, number theory, and combinatorics.
