Section 1: With Target Universities/Majors

  • Mathematics Skills: Crucial for both humanities (e.g., Economics) and STEM fields (e.g., Engineering, Computer Science). Aim to excel in IBDP mathematics courses.
  • US University Credits: Choose IB courses that may earn college credits. Common subjects include Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Languages.
  • Engineering Applicants: Physics HL is particularly important.

Section 2: Without Target Universities/Majors

  • Flexibility in Course Selection: Ensure your courses meet a wide range of university and major requirements.
  • Popular IB Subjects for Chinese Students:
    • Economics: Focus on mathematics and economics performance.
    • Engineering: Emphasize physics and mathematics.
    • Computer Science: Core courses are mathematics and computer science.
    • Medicine and Life Sciences: Important subjects are biology and chemistry.
    • International Relations and Political Science: Core subjects are history and politics.

Section 3: Course Selection Factors

  • Interest: Choose courses you are passionate about to stay motivated and achieve better results.
  • Ability: Select subjects that you are strong in to maximize your learning outcomes.
  • Application Direction: Align your course selection with your intended major or field of study.

Section 4: Course Selection Tips

  • Avoid Obvious Bias: Ideally, choose at least one subject that differs from your main application field to maintain a balanced profile.
  • Avoid Extremely Difficult Courses: IB has some very challenging subjects (e.g., Mathematics HL, Physics HL, Group 6 subjects). If not essential for your goals, avoid these to save time and effort.

Section 5: Easy Course SelectionConsider Easier HL Subjects: Some HL subjects are not significantly different from their SL counterparts (e.g., Economics, English B). Choosing these can occupy an HL slot without demanding much additional effort.
